Community Arts Education
The mission of GCAC's Community Arts Education Program is to provide programs, information, education, and hands-on opportunities for the benefit of young people and professional educators in Columbus.
Children of the Future
GCAC's Children of the Future program, joined with the Columbus Public Schools, offers afterschool programming at 21st Century Community Learning Centers throughout Columbus. A total of nine artists from the Children of the Future program have divided their time between ten Columbus Public elementary and middle schools to plan and conduct activities in creative writing, music, theatre and visual arts. Along with the enhancement of math, science, social science, and literary skills that arts based programming offers, Children of the Future emphasizes the daily development of constructive communication and conflict resolution skills as tools for coping with social pressures and temptations. For 2005, a total of 951 individual Columbus Public students, ages 5 to 14, participated in Children of the Future arts-based educational activities through 7,258 contacts.
The partnership with Columbus Public Schools marks a significant step in the rebuilding of the program. Children of the Future also provided weekly training/professional development sessions throughout the 2005 to its own artists and to any other afterschool program staff members who wished to attend. Specific invitees to these weekly training sessions included Capital Kids, City Year Columbus, Afterschool Counts!, ArtSafe, Godman Guild, Communities In Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus, and the YWCA.. GCAC continues to seek additional program partners and alternative Children of the Future programming sites.
