Community Arts Education
The mission of GCAC's Community Arts Education Program is to provide programs, information, education, and hands-on opportunities for the benefit of young people and professional educators in Columbus.
GCAC continues to receive significant annual funding from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners to support its arts education programs.
Artists-in-Schools
The Artists-in-Schools program, begun in 1976, is one of GCAC's longest-running programs. Artists-in-Schools links schools (K-12), parks and recreation centers, senior homes, correctional facilities, corporations, hospitals, libraries and community centers with the city's professional arts resources. Artist services may include performances, lectures, workshops, master classes, readings and multi-disciplinary experiences. Each artist/group sets its own fee for its services.
In 2006, 627 Artists-in-Schools activities were conducted, reaching a total audience of 116,212 people. Columbus Public Schools scheduled 79 activities for a total of 21,262 students, and 22,480 people attended Artists-in-Schools activities in non-school venues.
Feedback from these activities remains enthusiastic. An educator from Marburn Academy, where the Jazz Arts Group's American Jazz Experience performed, said, "This was by far the most exceptional school assembly I have EVER seen! It was really amazing and Jim Masters and his band were able to teach to students learning styles. We are thrilled with the performance!" An educator from Worthington Estates Elementary commented on artist Kendall Haven by saying, "Without exception, the feedback from students, parents and teachers was enthusiastically positive. Kendall worked with us to meet our school's needs for content, scheduling and programs. He was generous with his time and enthusiasm. We would highly recommend him!"
The 2006 Artists Preview Night, a showcase of Artists-in-Schools artists, was held September 19 at Veteran's Memorial. Four hundred educators, administrators, artists, students, parents and others attended.
