Community Arts Education

The mission of GCAC's Community Arts Education Program is to provide programs, information, education, and hands-on opportunities for the benefit of young people and professional educators in Columbus.

GCAC continues to receive significant annual funding from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners to support its arts education programs.

2006 Children of the Future

Children of the Future offers afterschool arts programming in partnership with the Columbus Public Schools at 21st Century Community Learning Centers throughout Columbus. Children of the Future emphasizes the daily development of constructive communication and conflict resolution skills as tools for coping with social pressures and temptations.

Children of the Future ended the 2005-2006 school year with nine artists working at 10 school buildings. Between January 2 and June 10, 2006, 473 students ages 5 to 14 participated in the program's arts-based educational activities. For the 2006-2007 school year, six artists are serving in 10 school buildings.

In October, Children of the Future expanded its partnership with the Columbus Public Schools to include an afterschool program in 20 middle school buildings citywide. This program focuses on academic achievement and includes one day per week of arts and culture programming provided by GCAC. Eleven artists work on a rotation basis to serve the schools. Children of the Future artists currently work with over 2,200 students during the afterschool hours.

Additionally, Children of the Future continues to provide weekly training/professional development sessions to its artists and to any other afterschool program staff members who wish to attend. Invitees include Capital Kids, City Year Columbus, Afterschool Counts!, ArtSafe, Godman Guild, Communities In Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus and the YWCA.
