Advocate for the Arts

The arts mean business in central Ohio. Big business. A 2007 study conducted by the Americans for the Arts reveals that local nonprofit arts and culture organizations generate more than $330 million in economic activity every year, resulting in more than $16 million in local tax revenues and $20 million in state tax revenues. The study also shows that:

  • The nonprofit arts and culture industry supports 11,068 full-time equivalent jobs in greater Columbus and generates more than $222 million in household income to local residents.
  • Aggregate attendance at area arts and culture events tops more than 6 million annually. One-third of attendees are non-residents.
  • Columbus-area residents spend approximately $20, excluding admission price, each time they attend an arts and culture event. Non-residents spend approximately $44.

The arts sector is a critical element of the economic and cultural vitality of the greater Columbus region. Arts and culture make Columbus a more livable city, attracting and retaining a talented workforce.

Because the arts depend heavily on public funding, and in today's competitive environment, advocacy for the arts is essential to maintain the public support that is necessary for a healthy arts community. If you want to see more arts in the schools and more arts in your community, become an advocate!

How do you advocate for the arts? Contact your elected officials and let them know that you appreciate and support public funding for the arts. Tell them what the arts mean to your community.
