The Huntington Holiday Train - Events in Columbus Ohio

Stop in to the Main Library to see the Huntington Holiday Train! This incredible 600-square-foot display features five trains running on nearly 300 feet of track, 50 pounds of snowflakes and detailed buildings intricately modeled after real structures in Germany.

The Huntington Holiday Train has wowed central Ohioans since it was originally displayed in the historic Huntington building in 1992. This is the seventh year Huntington has graciously loaned the train to Columbus Metropolitan Library.

Parking is free for the first hour in Main Library’s garage, and the train will be available for free viewing through Jan. 4, 2015.

Columbus Dance Theatre’s beloved holiday classic Matchgirl returns for its fifteenth anniversary year: a highlight of the Columbus Holiday Season! This timeless tale written by Hans Christian Andersen was created as CDT’s annual family ballet more than a decade ago by CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach. It continues to move Columbus audiences with its poignant message of forgiveness, hope, and joy.

CDT will partner with W.A.R.M. as part of the production. CDT will accept non-perishable food at all performances to be donated to the Food Bank. As well, CDT will donate 300 tickets to the performance to W.A.R.M. to be distributed to their clients and constituents.

Another exciting dimension for this year’s series of Matchgirl performances will be the presence of live music conducted by Ohio Wesleyan University Associate Professor of Music Jason Hiester. “We will have live music for the entire ballet this year. Act I are various works by Aaron Copland and the music for Act II is John Rutter’s Magnificat.

Performances of this family classic will be held at Otterbein University’s Fritsche Theatre.

Join us for our annual tradition of holiday shopping and glass making! Central Ohio’s finest artists will be on hand with jewelry, holiday decorations, and other glass artwork of all forms and sizes, thousands of glass pieces will be on display, many at discounted prices.

Walk-in workshops run all weekend long, giving you the opportunity to craft your own unique items, perfect for decorating year-round or as a personalized gift. As always, our talented artists offer glass-making workshops for both adults and children. Workshops run Friday from 3-6pm and Saturday & Sunday from 11am-3pm.

Blown Glass Ornament: Ages 12+. Shape and blow molten glass into a globe-shaped ornament. $30/ornament
Torchworked Bead: Ages 6+. Use smaller torches to heat and form glass into the shape of a candy-shaped bead. $15/bead

Violinist Stefan Jackiw, returns to perform two pieces, including the US premiere of a work co-commissioned with the Heidelberg Festival. Jackiw will take the spotlight performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Following will be David Fulmer’s Jubilant Arcs, designed to emulate and accompany Mozart’s violin concertos, will start the evening. The evening of festive classics will also feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 92 “Oxford” and Albinoni’s Adagio.

Not yet 30 years old, Stefan Jackiw, born in Boston to physicist parents, is recognized as “one of the best and most interesting young violinists heard in a long time” (Chicago Sun-Times), captivating audiences with playing that is “striking for its intelligence and sensitivity” (Boston Globe). Hailed for “talent that’s off the scale” (Washington Post), Jackiw has appeared as soloist with the Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco symphony orchestras, among others. He performed with ProMusica in 2011. His solo performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the YouTube Symphony Orchestra at Australia’s Sydney Opera House in March was seen live on YouTube by more than 30 million people worldwide.
