Handmade Paper Mural (Grade levels K-12)

A collaborative project becomes a permanent artwork for the school. The students learn about and make their own paper. The paper is then embellished and sewn together, or raw pulp is sculpted to make a single large sheet of paper, creating a large art piece for the school. Each piece is individually designed to enhance the school curriculum and site. This program requires and extended stay by the artist.

Hand Papermaking (Grade levels K-12)

An introduction to the artist and his work, and an interactive discussion of how we all use paper, how it impacts our lives, and historical reference to life without paper. A demonstration of papermaking from pulp preparation to the finished sheet is followed by a hands-on activity in which each student makes a piece of paper using his or her own pulp recipe and technique. Ideas for follow-up activities, how to use the paper when dry, and a question and answer period conclude the session. This activity can be divided into two one-day sessions: the first day students will learn about and make their own paper. After the paper is dry, the artist will return to help the students embellish their work to complete an artwork project.

Traditional Bookbinding (Grade levels K-12 (depending on the medium))

So we have made the paper and we have put an image on it, now what?!  We make a book! During this session the artist will explain the history and importance of bookmaking, and the differences between traditional and commercial bookbinding.  Next a demonstration of a pre-determined bookbinding style - there are many and all of them are fun and exciting! This introduction will then be followed by a hands-on activity in which students will design and create their own book. Depending on style and concept chosen each book can be blank or carry a theme. This project is fantastic for an entire school or a core group when combined with paper or printmaking to make a unique art object. This project may require more than one session depending on the style of book chosen and if it is a multi-media book.

Traditional Bookbinding

Traditional Printmaking (Grade levels 4-12)

Come discover the pleasure that is printmaking. Choose from: Intaglio (grades 7-12) in which an image is etched into copper with acid, Relief (grades 4-12) in which students carve a wood or lino printing block, and Collagraphs (grades 7-12) in which found objects are used to create the printing block.The artist will explain the history and importance of printmaking, the differences between traditional and commercial printmaking, and will demonstrate the process of a pre-determined printmaking medium. This brief introduction will then be followed by a hands-on activity in which the students will create their own plate. Finally, each student will discover the excitement of printmaking as a print is made. It is recommended that this project be divided into two one-day sessions. The first day the students will learn about and create their own printing blocks (in the case of intaglio, the prepared plates will be etched by the artist and returned). In the second session the artist returns to help the students print the blocks that have been prepared. The artist is able to provide non-toxic and water based media for all printmaking projects.
