Artist's Narrative

Andy Fraenkel is a storyteller, author and workshop leader. He is the recipient of the Artist Fellowship Award in Children's Literature from West Virginia's Division of Culture & History. Andy feels that one of the most important tasks for an educator is to transmit the joy and the richness of the spoken word to young people. "When kids are inspired to become more effective communicators," he comments, "everyone stands to benefit."

Andy, with a degree in Theater from City University of New York (1970), weaves together the art of the actor, storyteller and writer. He shares with students his sense of wonder in the variety of ways in which we communicate. Over the years he has made presentations in all sorts of venues; from elementary schools to colleges, from radio & TV to Off Broadway, from libraries and museums to storytelling festivals. He also offers master classes and workshops on the uses and dynamics of STORY for professionals in many fields.

Andy travels widely offering energetic programs, sharing folktales, legends and myths, as well as his collection of hand held musical instruments from around the world. Andy brings to your students an interactive program which promotes positive values, an appreciation for world literature and cultures, and provides tips on creative self-expression.

Whoever We Meet, Wherever We Go (Grade levels K-6)

Premiere presentation for elementary schools of enchanting multicultural tales on the theme of Respect. Andy might also provide tips on creative expression and speak about his experience immigrating to America as a child.

Traditional stories from various cultures of young men and women who overcome adverse and challenging situations.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Grade levels 4-12)

This retelling of Coleridge's classic poem brings the wonder and excitement of literature and poetry to students.

Always Time for a Story (Grade levels 4-12)

Judaism is a world full of stories; stories of joy and celebration, of  dealing with life's problems and of encountering life's mysteries. Andy shares the wisdom of the Jewish tale as well as his father's experiences during the holocaust.

Poetry & stories to deepen our understanding of Mother Earth - great for Earth Day.

Tell It (Grade levels 3-12)

Exploring the use of words is vital. Many educators are realizing that narrative and oral language is an important part of literacy development. This workshop helps students understand the techniques of good storytelling and gives them the tools to prepare for an oral presentation in front of a group. TELL IT will engage students in exercises for voice, movement, and gesture and will leave your students with a deeper appreciation of the spoken word.

Write It (Grade levels 3-12)

WRITE IT will help students get a better grasp of the basic elements and structure of stories, and includes fun exercises to get their stories on paper. Students come up with fantastic stories and writing.

Storytelling for the Teacher's Soul (For Educators)

"Storytelling for the Teacher's Soul" (In-Service Master Class, Workshop, or Keynote) delves into the uses of storytelling for the classroom. Through storytelling techniques, teachers will discover ways to inspire students to listen, to read, to respect themselves and others. Don't worry! The teacher doesn't have to become a professional storyteller to enter into the art of STORY.
