Artist's Narrative
Marian Funk performs in a wide array of venues. She performs as a strolling street musician, within the Irish tradition she plays ceili dances and sessions, and she is in demand as a feis musician, providing precise metronomic accompaniment for dance competitions. Her accordion keeps people moving at a polka party, wedding reception or square dance, performs for concerts and festivals, and is also comfortable demonstrating the complexities of Balkan rhythms in a workshop setting.
Rather than relying solely on recordings and written musical notes, she seeks out fellow traditional musicians to learn her craft, thereby learning musical as well as cultural nuances. Loyal to this folkloric tradition, she continues in the same vein by passing along folk culture to students and listeners.
Marian is the Midwest Regional Champion for Piano Accordion 1996-1999, qualifying her to compete at the All-Ireland. She has performed for the Central Ohio Folk Festival, Highland Folk Festival, Worthington Folklife Festival, Oktoberfest, and Mid-Ohio Valley Multi-Cultural Festival. She was the "Polka Reporter" for WCBE-FM, giving updates on local accordion-related events, and discussing the history of accordion music.
