Artist's Narrative

Amy Schildhouse Greenberg was inspired to a career as a writer while in an 11th grade creative writing class at Eastmoor High School in Columbus, Ohio. Since then she has published more than 100 works in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies in the United States and Mexico. Amy graduated from Vassar College and spent seven years in New York City as Promotion Manager of Crown Publishers, learning firsthand how books are written, edited, designed and marketed. She spent a year writing fiction in Paris, then worked as a freelance writer in New York and Mexico City, where she also led creative writing workshops for beginners and professionals, aged 17-87. Amy also translates books from Spanish to English. She has been involved in the Artists-in-Schools program since 1991, and the Ohio Arts Council's Arts Learning program since 1997.

Programs Available

Creative Writing Workshop (Grade levels 4-12)
In a dynamic, one-hour workshop, writer Amy Greenberg proves that any student can write a story... painlessly! She quickly engages the students in fun exercises designed to culminate in finished stories, pointing out how the students can successfully incorporate the basic elements of story-telling (plot, point-of-view, theme, voice) in their works. Amy emphasizes both process and product. Students learn that forms and structures exist, an idea fundamental to EVERY kind of writing they'll use in all their academic or career endeavors. Amy provides the regular classroom teacher (or students themselves, in a community workshop) with follow-up: an age-appropriate story of her own to read, and at least two writing exercises that they can do in the days following the workshop.

Creative Writing Workshop

  • Fees: $220/ $410 for two back-to-back/ $570 for three

Poetry Writing Workshop: (Grade levels 2-12)
In just one hour, beginning poets will be writing descriptive, imagery-filled poetry! Amy Greenberg leads the class/group in: creating group poems together; doing hilarious interviews with each other and writing them up as poetry; interpreting poems; and creating new poems of their own. Creativity and self-confidence just seem to blossom in this workshop. This workshop is IDEAL for grade levels 2-6.

Series of Creative or Poetry Writing Workshops: (Grade levels 2-12)
The series format allows Amy to expand upon the basic lessons students learned in the first workshop. She includes new technical lessons (on dialogue, "show, don't tell," using the five senses, sentence variation, etc.) and helps students explore their own sources for fiction and poetry(autobiography, dreams, interviews, fantasy). Students write completed stories or poems, and they learn how to critique and improve each others' work.
