Artist's Narrative

For more than 20 years, the rich tenor voice and dynamic presence of Dwight Lenox has captivated audiences around the country. From blues to ballads and jazz to swing, Dwight shines. His impeccable instincts and mellow sound have garnered the attention of some of the finest musicians in the industry. He's performed with Sammy Tucker and renowned organist Hank Marr. He's been showcased alongside the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Bobbie Humphreys, Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Mann. And as a featured vocalist with the 17-piece Columbus Jazz Orchestra he's shared the stage with Harold Jones and Carmen Bradford.

Dwight's goal with educational performances is to acquaint students with America's wonderful repetoire of popular song and jazz in a light hearted and joyful presentation. Students should leave the concert with an appreciation for the genre, an increased understanding of how jazz functions, and a working jazz vocabulary.

Programs Available

Introduction to Vocal Jazz (Grade levels 4-12)

Dwight presents a program that is an exploration of jazz through the eyes of a vocalist. Jazz is an American musical style that includes straight ahead playing, solos, scat singing and improvisation. The program includes a discussion of musical terms and introduces American composers and singers who have had a lasting influence on the American music scene. There is also opportunity for students to participate in the performance - further heightening the musical experience. Dwight will bring his trio into the school for this performance.

Activity Options:

Vocalist plus trio

• Duration: 45 to 60 minutes
• Fees: $600/ $1000 for two back-to-back
• Requirements: A room large enough to accommodate the group: vocalist, a piano, electric base, a complete set of drums and sound system. Electrical outlets will be needed for the bass and piano (unless an accoustic one is available) and the sound system.

Vocalist plus eight-piece band

• Duration: 45 to 60 minutes
• Fees: contact for quote
• Requirements: A room large enough to accommodate the group: vocalist, a piano, electric base, a complete set of drums and sound system. Electrical outlets will be needed for the bass and piano (unless an accoustic one is available) and the sound system.
