
Throwing clay pots, blowing glass, or creating a journal for a patient at a local hospital - you and your family can do all that and more at the Columbus Arts Festival. The Hands-on Art Activities area for adults and children has opportunities for all ages to try their hand in the creative process. And on Saturday and Sunday, don't miss the Children's Gallery, where children 12 and under can purchase artwork from the Festival for $5 or less. All hands-on activities will take place in the parking lot of the Columbus Museum of Art. Here's the schedule of events:
Throw a clay pot. Columbus ceramicist Adena Griffith will discuss the basic techniques of throwing clay on a potter's wheel. She will conduct demonstrations and assist adults in throwing different kinds of pots. A second ceramist, Tara Carter, will be on hand Saturday and Sunday to work with younger clay enthusiasts. Make a print.The Columbus College of Art and Design will help visitors tap into the rich tradition of printmaking. Participants will make a single edition print of an area landmark and take home a piece of art, history and Columbus culture. For kids and adults.
Create paper from scratch. Make your own paper with Dan Colvin of Cobenick Studios, who will demonstrate the fine art of papermaking. Dan will use the paper to create a mural to donate to The Ohio State University Medical Center and the Huckleberry House. For kids and adults.
Build a mural with bottle caps. Help the Hands-On Art Activities Committee build a mural to be donated to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. For kids and adults.
Make WORD art to wear. The Columbus Museum of Art invites Festival-goers to create unique headbands with a message using a variety of fabrics, stencils and fabric paint. Just for kids.
Make a book. Create a unique origami book with the OSU James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute. For kids and adults.
Blow glass. Artists from Glass Axis will help participants learn warm glass techniques while making glass beads and copper foiling. For kids and adults.
Learn how to tell a story. Members of the Storytellers of Central Ohio will be on hand to give visitors a crash course in the art of story writing and storytelling. For kids and adults.
Get abstract with Kandinsky. Create abstract paintings in the style of Wassily Kandinsky with Terra Gallery. For kids and adults.
Bring out the animal in you. Are you a parrot head? Join the Ohio Craft Museum in this activity to make an animal hat to wear around the Festival. Just for kids.
Blow Painting. Have fun making creative images with the Child Development Council of Franklin County. For kids and adults.
Butterflies to wear. Make your own butterfly necklace with the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. Just for kids.
Celebrate our Sister Cities. Join Columbus Sister Cities International in celebrating Columbus' three new sister cities with these craft activities: worry dolls from Zopopan, Mexico; finger puppets in the style of West African masks from Kumasi, Ghana; and notepads created from South Asian styled prints and notepaper from Ahmedabad, India. Boat Making. Learn about boat construction and design in this activity with the Columbus Santa Maria. For kids and adults.
Hands-on Art Activities and Children's Gallery Presented by: 

Pinocchio comes to life with a performance by the Grass Patch Performers, local actors ages 4-12. Park your chair for this special treat from Central Ohio's Dramatic Impact with Candace Mazur-Darman. Performances will take place on Sat., Jun. 8 and Sun., Jun. 9 at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Children's Theater is located in the Topiary Garden.
