What is OPPArt (Opportunities for Artists)?

OPPArt (Opportunities for Artists) is a new monthly series aimed toward helping individual artists connect with each other and further themselves and their work. The series will include professional development workshops, roundtable discussions, social events and more. Most events will be free, and all events will be open to artists of any genre or level. Getting Started with Soft Circuits: Make an LED Wristband 

1-5 p.m. Sat., Oct. 25 at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams
Cost: $25

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to make a simple cloth-and-felt wristband with LEDs that light up when the two ends of the wristband are attached via conductive velcro. The instructor will introduce participants to LED technology, basic electronics, and soft circuits. This is a class for beginners - no previous experience with electronics or sewing is necessary. This workshop is suitable for youth and adults.

Arduino Connect-a-thon

1-4 p.m. Sat., Nov. 1 at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams
Cost: $15, plus $40 to take the Arduino home

Arduino is a microcontroller platform broadly used in the fields of art and design to create all kinds of interactive artifacts, art installations and prototypes. It is also an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It is intended for artists, designers, hobbyists and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of the Arduino. No programming or electronics experience is necessary. Participants will need to bring a laptop. This workshop is suitable for youth and adults.

Intro to Processing

1-4 p.m. Sat., Nov. 8 at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams 
Cost: $15

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. This introductory workshop is designed for artists who want to understand the fundamentals of computer programming as a tool for creating fine art. Participants will be expected to bring a laptop with Web access and have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of using a computer for this workshop. 

Introduction to Actionscript 3

1-5 p.m. Sat., Nov. 22 at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams
Cost: $25

This introductory workshop introduces participants to some basic programming fundamentals as well as Flash Actionscript. Participants will acquire the knowledge and hands-on practice they need to begin creating rich Flash content. It is recommended that participants have a basic knowledge of Flash. Participants will be required to bring a laptop with Flash installed.
