in Press Releases May 16, 2018 3 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Applications are now open for the 2018 Visual Arts Fellowship through 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 30. The fellowship is a partnership between the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Columbus Museum of Art.

Established in 1986, the fellowship recognizes outstanding visual art practices within the community. A panel of distinguished arts professionals working outside Columbus will select four artists to receive a $5,000 fellowship award and the opportunity to participate in the 2019 Greater Columbus exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art. The awards are given to artists applying under the categories of photography, 2-D and 3-D visual art and craft. One of these awards is underwritten by Annie’s Fund, created in memory of surgeon, artist and arts patron Anne Miller, to recognize outstanding artists working with the media and techniques associated with craft arts.

Jurors for the 2018 Visual Arts Fellowship are: Lucy Mensah, Assistant Curator of Post-1950 Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts; Jacob Proctor, a New York-based curator and writer; and Matthew Thompson, Director of Advisory at Art Agency Partners in Los Angeles.

Artists must be a Franklin County resident for a minimum of one year to apply for the Fellowships and remain a resident for the grant period if selected as a recipient. While students are not eligible, artists may submit student work that is within the required timeframe. Based on the quality of applicants’ work created within the last three years, these awards are intended to assist artists in the creation of new work and the advancement of their careers. The recognition of individual creative work and artistic enterprise helps strengthen the Columbus area’s vibrant cultural community.

Applicants who make it to the final round of consideration for the Visual Arts Fellowships will be eligible to apply for the Dresden/Saxony Residency, a two- to three-month residency in Dresden, Germany. Recipients in 2018 will be in residence in Dresden during 2019, and will have the opportunity to participate in the Columbus Museum of Art’s Greater Columbus exhibition the following year.

Access to the online application and 2018 guide is available through the Arts Council’s Individual Artist Fellowships page. Any questions should be directed to Alison Barret, Grants & Services Director, at (614) 221-8406 or abarret@gcac.org.
