Weekend Warriors: Let’s Light Up This Holiday Season
By Lacey Luce
I hope you rested up during the Thanksgiving Holiday because there is a TON to do this weekend. Naturally this time of year we’ll start to see more holiday themed events emerge, but not to worry the Columbus arts scene has a good mix to offer to the festive and the festivus.
Let’s kick off with the holidays. I don’t celebrate Christmas, but even I can appreciate good, live holiday music and the Columbus Symphony and Jazz Arts Group both have stellar line ups with Holiday Pops and Home for the Holidays.
Winterfair is another staple this time of year. It is a fantastic place to get one-of-a-kind artisan made gifts. My biggest issue with Winterfair is that I tend to buy as much for myself as I do for others.
Local artisan shopping can be found at the King Arts Complex during their Holiday Fusion event. They’ve built a whole day’s worth of family-friendly activities for this coming Saturday, including local artists, poetry, dance, lights and music.
Lights are a holiday tradition that I particularly like as glimmering little globes adorning trees and buildings, feels universal. The newly renovated Scioto Mile has their grand illumination ceremony on Friday (activities kick off at 5 p.m.) and the lights will be up through the holiday season.
If you head to the Scioto Mile stop by the Cultural Arts Center, they are opening a new exhibition, the Whiteness of the Whale, and there’s a free opening reception 6-8 p.m. Dec. 4.
Speaking of lights, it’s Gallery Hop time. The December hop (aka Holiday Hop) on Saturday is one of my favs in that I’m not yet sick of winter, and the lights make High Street so charming and fun.
But not everything to do this weekend is “seasonal.” Tonight CATCO opens Peter and the Starcatcher—which is based off of a novel that is basically the Peter Pan origin story as told by humorist Dave Barry and co-author Ridely Pearson. On Friday, catch local favorites, Saintseneca, at the Newport Music Hall (oh the memories I have of the Newport).
With so much going on, I’m kind of looking forward to Christmas Day, when I’m pretty sure I can just SLEEP!
Have fun, stay warm and share your photos via #artmakescbus!
