in Press Releases May 15, 2017 2 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Visual Arts Fellowship continues a partnership between the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Columbus Museum of Art that recognizes outstanding visual art practices within the community. A panel of distinguished arts professionals working outside the area will select four artists to receive a $5,000 fellowship award and the opportunity to participate in the 2018 Greater Columbus exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art. Three of the awards are given to artists applying under the categories of photography, 2-D and 3-D visual art and craft. A fourth award, given in the name of Annie’s Fund, recognizes self-identified emerging artists with limited formal training. Applications for the 2017 Visual Arts Fellowship Program are now open. The application deadline is June 30.

Jurors for the 2017 Visual Arts Fellowship are: Rehema C. Barber, director and chief curator of the Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University; Geof Oppenheimer, associate professor of practice in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago; and Rob Teeters, founder, Front Desk Apparatus, New York.

Artists must be a Franklin County resident for a minimum of one year to apply for the Fellowships and remain a resident for the grant period if selected as a recipient. While students are not eligible, artists may submit student work that is within the required timeframe. Based on the quality of work created within the last three years, these awards are intended to assist artists in the creation of new work and the advancement of their careers. The recognition of individual creative work and artistic enterprise helps strengthen the Columbus area’s vibrant cultural community.

Applicants who make it to the final round of consideration for the Visual Arts Fellowships will be eligible to apply for the Dresden/Saxony Residency, a two to three month residency in Dresden, Germany. Recipients in 2017 will be in residence in Dresden during 2018, and will have the opportunity to participate in the Columbus Museum of Art’s Greater Columbus exhibition the following year.

Access to the online application and 2017 guide is available through GoArts, the Arts Council’s online application system (goarts.gcaconline.com). More information is available through the Individual Artist Fellowships page on the Arts Council web site, or by contacting Alison Barret, Grants & Services Director at 614.221.8406 or abarret@gcac.org.
