I am a rabid Joss Whedon fan. Fellow fans may have noted that I occasionally pepper this blog with quotes from the Whedonverse (I did it just for you). So, my obsession right now is Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Burlesque at Strongwater Food & Spirits this Friday. This has apparently happened before and I missed it (HOW DID I MISS THIS?). I will not miss it again—the people putting this on, and those who attend, they are my tribe.
For those who know exactly what I’m talking about and why I’m so giddy, yes I’ll be brushing up, re-watching what I assume is the source material (Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, which I have on DVD of course) and re-submitting my application to the Evil League of Evil (still not sure what my evil name should be).
If you don’t know who Dr. Horrible is, but find yourself curious, go find a Whedon friend and borrow their DVD or download it on itunes then you can decide if this is the kind of crazy that’s for you (sadly it is no longer on Netflix).
If you don’t’ know and don’t care, well, I guess we should move along.
I for one am looking forward to a loooooong weekend. Hopefully I’ll be able to pack in everything I want to do and still work in some quality couch time—I just started watching Penny Dreadful (thank you Columbus Metropolitan Library) and I am hooked.
Per usual there is Gallery Hop, which is always a sure thing, but did you know that there is also a comedy festival happening in the Short North this weekend?
Columbus Commons, which I have come to truly appreciate, has Rusted Root playing Friday and the long-awaited Shadowbox event, Gallery of Echoes, on Sunday. I’m a sucker for a good collaboration and this one partners the Columbus Museum of Art with Shadowbox and includes music, dance, video and fine art.
If you’d rather keep indoors (it’s a bit hot out there) but still want a Shadowbox fix, they recently opened Screamers, which combines sketch comedy and music and looks to be a scream (see what I did there?).
Antoher indoor option that jumped out at me is The Third Man screening at the Wexner Center. I know I saw this movie about a million years ago, I remember liking it, but can’t really remember what happened other than a vague recollection of a Ferris wheel scene that I think might have been important—I have a mind like a sieve.
I know it’s hot, but let’s head back outside because it is, after all, Labor Day weekend.
Friday the Rhythm on the River series has The Steepwater band and Angela Perley and the Howlin’ Moons.
Monday head over the Upper Arlington to the always fabulous Labor Day Arts Festival. (Small disclaimer: I’m friends with the woman who puts this shindig together and am therefor somewhat biased in its fabulousness).
Finally, this is the last weekend to catch The Miser in Schiller park.
Last weekend Urban Scrawl owned the #artmakescbus feed and there were so many amazing photos shared. THANK YOU. I cannot wait to see what y’all get up to this weekend.
Final thought: yes, Labor Day is usually the sign that summer is winding down, but remember people fall in Cbus is spectacular! September and October are my favorite months and there are so many good things headed our way.
