CONTEMPORARY SCREEN- Kino B: Contemporary Cinema by Berlin-Based Artists

Artist, critic, curator, and Columbus-native Caroline Koebel assembled a provocative blend of nine contemporary experimental films while on a research trip in Berlin. The program includes work by the late luminary Harun Farocki, Guillaume Cailleau (recipient of the Berlinale Silver Bear Jury Prize for Short Film), and Sylvia Schedelbauer, whose 2011 film Sounding Glass won accolades at the Ann Arbor and Oberhausen Film Festivals. The Kino B artists share a command of cinema’s potential for experientially transformative critical reflection. Their travels far and wide encompass a specially engineered tracking shot through a rainforest; a young man in the woods amidst harrowing visions of war; an explication of how computer motion-graphics elide differences between real and simulated trees; such authors and philosophers as Friedrich Nietzsche, Marguerite Yourcenar, Hannah Arendt, and Roland Barthes; as well as lived experiences in the streets of Athens, Mumbai, and Berlin. Big Local Arts Show

Big Local Arts is hosting a one day Art show at 400 West Rich and Strongwater Food and Spirits. Come see some amazing local art and help support local artists as well as Big Local Arts. There will be a large mix of 2-D and 3-D art available for purchase.

Big Local Arts supports local artists by giving them the opportunity to showcase their work to the thousands of people who come to the Columbus Arts Festival. In addition to The Arts Festival we will also be hosting a gallery show to continue to showcase local artists and to help make the Big Local Arts Tent better each year.

So come out for a night of great art and have a drink at Strongwater Food and Spirits. There will also be a raffle TBA.

Anita Hill and Freida Lee Mock introduce Anita: A Screening and Discussion

In 1991, the televised coverage of Anita Hill testifying that Supreme Court-nominee Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her riveted the nation and mobilized activism around sexual harassment. Produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Freida Lee Mock, this new documentary sheds light on the important legacy of those hearings. Hill and Mock will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A following the screening moderated by Wendy G. Smooth, associate professor in Ohio State’s Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Mock has directed and produced a number of documentaries, including the Oscar-winning Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision (1994), Rose Kennedy: A Life to Remember (1990), and Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner (2006). Anita Hill is currently a professor of social policy, law, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. (77 mins., video)

COSI After Dark – a 21+ Event: Build & Create: Design Challenge

It’s COSI without kids! Grab a brew and BUILD at the November COSI After Dark. Create (and keep) your own flying contraptions and test them in a vertical wind tunnel. Make an air-powered missile, them take aim and try to hit a bullseye from twenty feet away. Assemble your own skittering robot from a toothbrush and an electric motor, then race your creation against others for robotic glory. Build a castle, house, or sculpture – or anything you can imagine – with COSI’s beloved GIANT blue blocks, then wreck your creation (we know you want to, and it’s okay). Plus, geek out with grown-ups and explore COSI, ride the High Wire Unicycle, get lost in Adventure, enjoy specially-themed crafts and activities, concessions, a cash bar, and a featured craft beer from Columbus Brewing Company. Event partners include Engineers Without Borders Central Ohio Professional Chapter, IC3D, Design Outreach, and Columbus Brewing Company. Design Outreach will demonstrate their LifePump and other life-transforming solutions for poor and under-served communities. IC3D will showcase their 3D printers and innovative filament for 3D printing. This event is for ages 21 and over, only. Valid photo ID required. Presidential Libraries

Jeri Diehl Cusack, Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Historical Society trustee and retired Library staff member, discusses the 13 Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives. Since FDR opened his library in 1941, his successors have all preserved their papers and donated artifacts which reflect their life and times.
