Weekend Warriors: Getting Into the Spirit

Halloween will be here soon and HighBall is a mere 10 days away. Do you have your costume yet? Are you in the holiday spirit? If not, I found a few things to help get you in the proper mindset and/or provide a little inspiration for your HighBall/Halloween get up.

First, let’s talk inspiration. I personally find looking at couture gowns up close and personal very inspiring and OSU’s Historic Costume and Textiles Collection currently has the perfect exhibition, American Aesthetics, which includes pieces from top designers of the late 20th century.

If you like a little more BOO! to your Halloween, then Clayspace/Gallery 831 has the perfect exhibition for you, There Are Monsters Under Your Bed, where local artist explore (you guessed it) Halloween themes.

There are certain things I like to watch to get in Halloween mode (I’m all ready to screen Cabin in the Woods, again). But what about catching something live? Standing Room Only Theatre Company has Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (those Victorians really knew their horror fiction) and A Portable Theater Company has Tales From the Grave.

It may be looming, but Halloween isn’t here yet and there’s plenty to do that doesn’t involve early spooky holiday indulgence.

For example: Tim Easton is playing at Natalie’s Coal-Fired Pizza, Short North Stage is opening A Little Night Music, and Columbus College of Art & Design is bringing in Michael Chabon for a visiting artist talk.

I found these things searching events on ColumbusMakesArt.com and if these don’t tickle your fancy you can search and find something lovely that does.

One more quick note before I’m off, If you haven’t had a chance to see the Riffe Gallery’s Flashback to Now or Columbus Childrens’ Theatre’s Pinkalicious—it’s your last chance.
