Join us for this conversation that pairs acclaimed art historians and Picasso experts Yve-Alain Bois, Lisa Florman, and Philip Armstrong for a discussion of the artist’s works, including those in our fall exhibition, Transfigurations: Modern Masters from the Wexner Family Collection.
A widely recognized specialist in 20th-century art and longtime editor for the journal October, Yve-Alain Bois has curated and co-curated a number of highly regarded exhibitions, including Matisse and Picasso: A Gentle Rivalry (1999) and Picasso Harlequin 1917-1937 (2008). His influential books include Painting as Model (1990); Formless: A User’s Guide (with Rosalind Krauss, 1997), Matisse and Picasso (1998); and Art Since 1900 (with Benjamin Buchloh, Hal Foster, and Rosalind Krauss, 2004). Bois is currently working on a study of Barnett Newman’s paintings and the catalogue raisonné of Ellsworth Kelly’s paintings and sculptures. He has previously taught at Harvard and Johns Hopkins University and is now a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
Ohio State Professor and Chair of History of Art Lisa Florman’s primary interests are modernism, the history of art history, and above all, the intersection of the two. Florman’s first book, Myth and Metamorphosis (2000), examined Picasso’s classicizing prints of the 1930s in the context of both surrealism and contemporaneous understandings of classical antiquity. Her second book, Concerning the Spiritual-and the Concrete-in Kandinsky’s Art was published this year by Stanford University Press. Florman contributed the essay “Vis-à-vis: Regarding Picasso’s Figure Paintings” to the Transfigurations exhibition catalogue.
Ohio State Associate Professor of Comparative Studies Philip Armstrong has published widely in the area of contemporary visual arts and culture and has written numerous essays on contemporary political theory. His recent publications include As Painting: Division and Displacement with Laura Lisbon and Stephen Melville (2001), Reticulations: Jean-Luc Nancy and the Networks of the Political (2009), and Jean-Luc Nancy: Politique et au-delà with Jason Smith (2011).

Crafternoons!: Recycled Winter Ornaments

Crafternoons! is a creative art-making program geared towards adults who love innovative and crafty projects. Guests 16 and over create unique projects each month with supplies provided by the space. Free and open to all with RSVP required.
This month, we will be making recycled winter ornaments! Using recycled decorative paper, we will create two unique styles of 3D snowflake ornaments, as well as ornaments out of paper maché. Come learn how to make these three distinct styles of ornaments in order to decorate your home, your office, or even give as gifts!
Even though some of these crafts may be accessible for children under 16, we ask that guests only 16 and over register for Crafternoons! Open Door Art Studio Presents Red Hot

Red Hot is an all encompassing exhibition featuring artists with disabilities from Open Door Art Studio as well as the staff artists. All parties involved were asked to reflect on the theme “Red Hot,” and create a piece that best expresses themselves as artists. This unique exhibition is an excellent opportunity to experience the space and get to know about all of the artists represented by Open Door Art Studio.

The community is invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday, November 15th from 5pm until 7pm in Open Door Art Studio’s spacious gallery at 1050 Goodale Boulevard. Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served in this unique and inspiring art setting. For those unable to attend the reception, the exhibit will be on display from November 15th‐ December 15th.

PBJ & Jazz concerts are 1-hour long interactive concerts designed to introduce jazz and American music to young children and their families. Featuring some of Columbus’ finest musicians and ensembles, PBJ & Jazz concerts are hosted by former Columbus Music Hall owner and retired music educator Rebecca Ogden – and are a great introduction to live music for the youngest audience member.
PBJ & Jazz concerts are $5 per person at the door with a family maximum of $20. Children receive a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, juice and a cookie. The 2014-15 concerts will be held in the ballroom in the Lincoln Theatre complex, 769 E. Long Street, Columbus, OH 43203. Xclaim Dance Company Director Mariah Layne French and veteran company members are crafting a collection of original work for stage and film. The live season premiere of BLUE is scheduled for mid-November at the Columbus Dance Theatre.
Act One will feature a multimedia collage dance work inspired by the iconic Miles Davis Album “Kind of Blue,” a work in progress preview for the upcoming film release, which is a collaboration with local filmmaker Terry Wilson and Columbus area musicians. Act Two will feature three eclectic contemporary works entitled Blue Like Jazz, Oceans and Sky, and Boom Chic, all centered around the blue rhythm and tones in life.
