Dear Columbus, can we take a little break?
Seriously between season finales from all of our great arts organizations to fundraisers, gallery hop, midnight market, Franklinton Fridays, and exhibition openings … a girl needs to put her feet up.
You would think there would be a lull between season finales and the myriad of summer festivals and concerts.
Not so much.
I’m particularly fascinated by the Shadowbox Live production of Which One’s Pink, a multi-media celebration of Pink Floyd that includes work by CCAD students. I love collaborations. Which One’s Pink is showing on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. On Fridays and Saturdays Shadowbox has sketch comedy in the form of Reckless.

On the visual arts side, this is the last weekend to see A Tradition of Progress: Ohio Decorative Arts 1860-1945. I’ve always been fascinated by the history of decorative arts, in particular the Arts and Crafts movement. Yes it’s in Lancaster, so, ROAD TRIP!
As one exhibition closes, another opens. Actually two. This Friday at The Wexner Center for the Arts Catherine Opie: Portraits and Landscapes and Jack Whitten: Five Decades of Painting open. Opie and Whitten will be at Friday’s opening celebration. They’ll be taking part in an onstage conversation moderated by journalist Tyler Green. The talk starts at 5 p.m., and the opening celebration begins at 6 p.m. Both are free and open to the public. On Saturday the Wex is celebrating Art Museum Day by offering free admission to the exhibitions from noon-7 p.m. and if you wan to become a member (and why wouldn’t you) memberships can be purchased onsite, noon- 7 p.m. at a 25% discount. Holla!
And wait, there’s more! Also on Saturday at the Wex is the Next@Wex Fest featuring Stephin Merrit of the Magnetic Fields accompanied by Sam Davol.
Wow. I’m both tired and excited just writing this.
There’s still a ton to do in our fair city, and more is coming. Columbus Underground just released its crazy big list of summer festivals.
Oh, one more note. Pearl Market opens next week. Now that I’m in downtown proper and can walk over easily, I’m super excited about this. Summer doesn’t just mean a million things to see and do in the big city, it means fresh basil and tomatoes!
