This exciting program gives voice to the diverse talents of the Columbus Dance Theatre company dancers. Dancers Making Dances is a program of all new works for the company created by the company. The evening offers CDC company members a chance to choreograph new works for each other. “We have an incredibly talented group of dance artists in this company, each with unique views of dance and dance making. I am so excited about this great opportunity for our dancers to get to share their personal choreographic view with our audience. CDT patrons have come to expect this program each Season, looking forward to the new creations of our wonderfully talented dancers.” says Tim Veach, artistic director at CDT.
Six dancers from CDT will create new works: Christian Broomhall, Erika Junod, Terrence Meadows, Stefani Crea, Cheston Repola, and Jaime Kotrba. This program lies at the heart of CDT’s mission to emphasize the creation of new dance, fostering the future of the art form. “Each of these dancers is bringing a unique voice to his or her work,” offers Veach. “It is so exciting to be able to observe each of them in their own unique process bringing fresh new perspectives to choreographic development and to see all the dancers working so well together. It is going to be an exciting weekend of new dance.”

Birds of Chicago with Ben Bedford

Birds of Chicago is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell: two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. Birds of Chicago has been called “refreshing and rewarding” by the Chicago Sun Times.
Ben Bedford delivers intriguing sketches of America, its individuals, their victories and their struggles. Often drawing upon history, Bedford’s songs have a strong sense of time and place. The songs are rich in sensory detail which allows the listener to hear, see and feel each narrative. Poignant, but never sentimental, Bedford’s portrait-like songs capture the vitality of his characters and draw the listener deep into the narratives. Bedford’s songs tackle scenarios including homelessness, the plight of a Confederate soldier’s wife during the American Civil War, the aerial triumphs of Amelia Earhart, the life of Jack London, the murder of Emmett Till in 1955, John the Baptist, the poet Vachel Lindsay and even the 1973 standoff between members of The American Indian Movement and federal agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

This year, Ohio Art League’s annual ‘One Night’ fundraiser will be paying tribute to member artists spanning our 105-year history. Founded in 1909, the Ohio Art League is an innovative leader in Ohio for supporting visual artists during all stages of their careers. Through professional development, mentorship and advocacy, OAL works strategically to help cultivate and retain top visual talent while positioning the state as a hub for the visual arts.

The Epic of Everest

Filmed in brutally harsh conditions, The Epic of Everest is the official cinematic record of Britain’s third attempt to climb the world’s highest peak in 1924. The expedition culminated in the deaths of two famed climbers (George Mallory and Andrew Irvine) and led to an ongoing debate over whether the team reached the summit or not. Among the film’s breathtaking images are some of the earliest footage of life in Tibet, including a sequence at the Rongbuk monastery. The British Film Institute’s stunning restoration reintroduces the film’s original color tints and tones. The restoration also features a new award-winning score by Simon Fisher Turner, commissioned by the BFI. (87 mins., DCP)

On Fri., Oct. 10, CAC opens the Jim Arter: A Life Within Art Main Gallery Exhibit with an Artist’s Reception from 6 – 8 pm.
While Jim Arter is well known in Central Ohio for arts programming for children, training sessions for Artists, and working with a variety of organizations in the community (GCAC, CRPD), this exhibit focuses on aspects of the inner life that moved and supported him in these public efforts. He sees with an artist’s eye, and nothing in his world is ordinary.
Mr. Jim’s influence through the Arts Community is extensive. He and friend Scott Nausbaum founded the Columbus Aids Task Force Art for Life Auctions, in 1989. If you are an artist or art lover in Central Ohio today, you probably know of the Art for Life Auctions, which continue to raise funds for the Aids Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio). A variety of Arter’s Gum Wrapper sculptures have been favorites in the auctions, along with many of his paintings and drawings.

Danielle Poling is the artist behind the Sunwall Moonwall Murals that were painted in the summer of 2014 at the Cooke Road railroad underpass. The murals emphasize pre-historic Native American culture that thrived in Ohio before European expansion into the new world in the 15th century. Poling will discuss her artist process and outline the project from conception through completion with a multimedia presentation. This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Governor Thomas Worthington Education Center located in the Museum Gallery of the Ohio Statehouse.

Adam Fears has been diligently working to hone his craft as an artist and songwriter. He has written thousands of songs, some with hit makers such as Blake Mevis (“Fool Hearted Memory”), Lee Miller (“In Color”), and Don Goodman (“Angels Among Us”). He toured extensively for radio and fans in support of his 2007 independently released album, You Get Me, which quickly provided success for multiple singles on the Texas Music Chart.
