COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Greater Columbus Arts Council awarded 10 community organizations a total of $11,604 during the second round of the 2009 Franklin County Neighborhood Arts program, GCAC announced today.
The Franklin County Neighborhood Arts program supports neighborhood and community groups with public arts projects in all disciplines. Programming that actively provides access to the arts for people of all cultural backgrounds, economic status, sexual orientation, age and physical ability receives priority consideration.
Grants will go to projects such as a series of music and creative art workshops for cancer survivors through the Haven of Hope Cancer Foundation; an annual festival promoting Chinese cultures and traditions produced by Chinese Culture Link, Inc.; and PBJ & Jazz at the Topiary Park, a free summer concert series for young children and families.
The Franklin County Neighborhood Arts program is funded by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and is supported by a donation from Ashland Inc. Each year, GCAC awards three rounds of grants as part of the program. So far, GCAC has awarded $36,654 to 36 organizations in 2009.

The deadline for the second round of 2009 Franklin County Neighborhood Arts grants is Fri., Oct. 30. GCAC will hold two workshops to help organizations with their applications. The first will be at 2 p.m. on Tue. Sept. 29 at the King Arts Complex, 867 Mt. Vernon Ave., and the second will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thu., Oct. 1 at GCAC’s offices, 100 E. For the October 30 deadline only, Franklin county K-12 schools and universities may apply for this grant. Projects that involve school-community partnerships will be viewed more favorably. Applicants must demonstrate how proposed projects will provide students with a unique arts-based experience that extends beyond the reach of traditional classroom instruction. Funding cannot be used to supplement existing arts programming, or for stand-alone assembly programs.
