COLUMBUS, Ohio – The board of trustees of the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) approved 497 Funds for Artists grants totaling $247,522 from Feb. 1 through April 30, 2024. Funds for Artists grants are awarded on a rolling basis throughout the year; artists have through October to apply for awards. Of the 497 grants awarded so far in 2024, 198 awards are for first-time applicants to the program.
“Funds for Artists shifted to a rolling application period this year,” says GCAC Grants & Community Engagement Associate Ariel Peguero. “This means that instead of applying at a specific date, artists have until the final week of October to apply. The goal of this change is to alleviate some of the stress for the artists by giving them more opportunities to apply throughout the year.”
Funds for Artists grants are intended to assist individual artists and groups of artists creating together on a permanent basis in making new art, growing artistic skills and marketing to a broader audience. For 2024, the award amounts were reduced from $1700 to $500 since funds were depleted by mid-year in 2023 and GCAC could not open the third application round. In response, GCAC has also introduced the larger, competitive Artist Projects grants, created based on artist feedback and numerous community roundtables.
“This was a significant reduction in the amount, but we noticed that more and more artists are applying and feeling less overwhelmed by the application process,” added Peguero. “I think this is the value of the Funds for Artists program overall. It’s a big step for artists in terms of finding funds for their work, and we hope this program encourages artists to dream bigger and apply for more funds.”
