COLUMBUS, Ohio – The board of trustees of the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) approved 590 Funds for Artists grants totaling $945,326 in the first of three grant cycles for 2023.
Funds for Artists grants (formerly called Support for Professional Artists) are intended to assist individual artists and groups of artists creating together on a permanent basis in making new art, growing artistic skills and marketing to a broader audience. For 2023 the award amounts were increased from $1500 to $1700, and additional expenses were made eligible for the grants, including computers, event costs, and travel to formal performance and educational opportunities.
In this round, more than 51 percent (300) of the awards went to new applicants. In total, 590 artists received grants totaling $945,326. By comparison, the program in 2022 awarded $785,650 to 656 artists for the year.
“We’re amazed to see that the number of first round grants for 2023 practically exceeds all of last year,” says Alison Barret, VP of grants and community engagement. “While a lot of factors are contributing to these numbers, we know we can attribute a large portion of the success to the GCAC Navigators, who are out in the community spreading the word about our many programs and how they directly benefit artists.”
There are two more rounds of Funds for Artists grants. Applications are due on June 1 and Sept. 1, 2023.
