Second-Annual Columbus Open Studio and Stage Allows Individuals a Look Into the Creative Process

COLUMBUS, Ohio—The second-annual Columbus Open Studio and Stage (COSS) event will take place this fall on Oct. 7-8. Presented by Columbus Open Studio and Stage in partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council (Arts Council) and Art Makes Columbus/Columbus Makes Art, COSS invites the public to step into 50 different Columbus artist studios, see behind the scenes at seven local theaters and to explore 12 community art collectives.

“The first Columbus Open Studio and Stage was a resounding success, with more than 1,300 studio visits and nearly $24,000 in art sales over the weekend,” said Jami Goldstein, vice president of marketing, communication and events at the Greater Columbus Arts Council. “We were thrilled with the response from visitors last year, and we’re excited to continue our mission of highlighting the incredibly talented artists of our city and giving people a chance to peek behind the scenes of their creative process.”

To participate, the public can order a map online. Starting in early, August maps will be available for pick up in several central Ohio locations, and will serve as each participant’s pass for admission into participating studios. Participants will also be able to download an app for their smartphones with a complete map of COSS sites; a receipt or a physical map will still be required for entry. Registered participants will also be invited to sign-up for timed group tours at seven Columbus performance venues.

Many artists will include demos in their studios, and community arts partners will have demos and (in some locations) hands-on activities. Tours are self guided, as participants use the map to choose their destinations throughout the weekend.

“COSS showcases the process of art-making that happens before most audiences see the work,” said Stephanie Rond, one of four founding members of Columbus Open Studio and Stage. “We’ve seen similar events be successful in other cities and felt that Columbus could definitely put its own stamp on the concept.”
